Squaw Valley Institute (SVI) in partnership with the Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows presents Behind The Gold: Winning Traits of Olympic Athletes. The Olympics are a core part of our culture in America. That especially rings true in Squaw Valley, site of the 1960 Winter Games and home to many a medalist. On Friday, November 17, Tom Kelly, noted Olympic historian and longtime U.S. Ski Team spokesperson will bring the Olympics to life. Kelly’s Behind the Gold: Winning Traits of Champion Athletes will take you back to the origins of the Olympics and fast-forward you to learning inside stories of Olympic champions to experience firsthand stories of athletic success and how you can translate those winning traits into your own personal life or business career. Kelly has been on the front lines of nine Olympics and in the finish area for more than 130 U.S. Olympic and World Championship medals.
“I love storytelling,” said Kelly. “With each Olympic medal there’s a story behind it that is both entertaining to hear and impactful on the lessons it teaches all of us.” A native of Wisconsin, Kelly credits his passion directly to the 1960 Olympics in Squaw Valley. Kelly’s presentation will touch on the origins of the ancient games, as well as providing a preview of the upcoming Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea. “One of my favorite stories is the 2006 gold medal of Julia Mancuso,” said Kelly. “As everyone in Squaw Valley knows, Julia is a natural skier who loves being up on the mountain in any condition.”
Kelly has served in a variety of roles in the sport, but found a career niche when he joined the staff of what is now U.S. Ski & Snowboard in 1986. Since 1988, he has served as its primary spokesperson. His Behind the Gold presentations have been seen by thousands. “Behind the Gold has given me an opportunity to provide insights to anyone from the passionate fan to the once-every-four-years Olympic viewer,” said Kelly. “These are stories that impact all of us in a very positive way. I’m appreciative to the Squaw Valley Institute for providing this opportunity to the community.”
The 45-minute presentation mixes stunning photography, awe-inspiring video and Kelly’s unique storytelling ability will take the audiences directly into the finish line of the Olympics. A veteran of nine Olympics as a frontline communicator, Kelly will talk about the unique place the Olympics holds in our culture today, as well as conveying insightful stories of athletes.
