December 14, 2017, at the Olympic Village Lodge in Squaw Valley
Squaw Valley Institute (SVI) in partnership with Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows presents Leadership Across the Mountains with Retired Rear Admiral Navy Seal Scott P. Moore and the Karakoram Group. The Karakoram Group is comprised of former leaders from every level of our nation’s elite special operations units. Learn how to identify ways in which local businesses and leaders can optimize their operations and develop culture and collaboration across all levels of staffing.
“Investing in people is just as critical as investing in technology: the skills that make a great leader are not the same skills as a great Navy SEAL or a great ski patroller or groomer. On any given day in a mountain environment like this, you can’t predict what’s going to happen. In that situation, when you are working with the team from the top to the bottom of the mountain, it often starts not with telling but with listening, not with micromanaging but with empowering and enabling, and not with separating people but with bringing them together. That’s where the magic happens.” Dave Cooper, Founder, Chief Strategy Officer and Chief of Operations for Karakoram Group.
Rear Admiral Moore is the co-founder and senior partner of the Karakoram Group. Moore has 30 years of experience leading SEAL teams including; Desert Storm, Just Cause (Panama), Bosnia, Mogadishu, 911, and Haiti. Before he retired, he led over 2,000 missions. Moore has commanded at every level of Naval Special Warfare; from the platoon, assault squadron, and SEAL Team, to commander and Naval Special Warfare Development Group. Additionally, he commanded a Joint Special Operations Task Force in Afghanistan for several years. He has also served in numerous staff positions including the SEAL officer detailer; maritime operations officer at Special Operations Command Europe; director, Counter Terrorism Division, National Security Council; deputy director for Special Operations and Counterterrorism, Joint Staff; and as deputy for operations, Office of the Defense Representative to Pakistan. He was the commanding officer of the Naval Special Warfare Development Group (DEVGRU) from 2007 to 2009. Currently, he is assigned as the deputy commander, Naval Special Warfare Command. He is a graduate (with distinction) of the Senior Naval War College, earning a master’s in National Security Affairs.
Andy Wirth, President and CEO of Squaw Valley Ski Holdings, will introduce Moore and speak to the vast benefits the Karakoram Group has provided for the operations staff and managers of Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows.
“Scott Moore has become a very good friend of ours and mine and while he is most certainly the quintessential leader, patriot and warrior, he is also truly a man of the mountains.” said Andy Wirth. “Admiral Moore has lead over 200 combat missions in Afghanistan in extremely challenging mountainous terrain, and frequently leads climbs on some of the big walls down in Yosemite Valley. I am quite certain that all attendees will find interest and intrigue in his presentation on leadership and lessons from leading the world’s most elite groups of warriors in some of the most intense circumstances one can contemplate.”
The event will be held at the Olympic Valley Lodge. Doors open at 6pm. Keynote address 7pm – 8:30pm with public Q&A following the presentation. Refreshments for sale and a cash bar will be available.
