The Squaw Valley Institute enhances the quality of life within the unique mountain environment of Squaw Valley, North Lake Tahoe, Truckee and Incline Village.

Our events are open to the public, and span a wide variety of topics including: the environment, film and entertainment, health and wellness, world affairs, extreme sports, adventure travel, arts and sciences. We provide a forum for learning about complex subjects, and foster enduring relationships among our members.

Our goal is to bring programming to the Tahoe region that inspires uncommon conversations.

2002 - Squaw Valley Institute was formed with the aim of enriching cultural life in the North Lake Tahoe region through educational programming.

2003 - Squaw Valley Institute hosted a Speaker Series on Tahoe's Environmental Politics.  One event included a panel discussion with California State Senator Debra Bowen, Chief Social Scientist at the Sierra Nevada Research Center Dr. Mark Nechodom, Steve Teshara former Executive Director of the Lake Tahoe Gaming Alliance, and Rochelle Nason, Executive Director of the League to Save Lake Tahoe.  Leo Poppoff, a retired atmospheric scientist, helped to organize this event and moderated this lively discussion, which was sponsored by the Resort at Squaw Creek.

2004 - Anthony Brunello, Executive Director of the Tahoe-Baikal Institute, discussed some of the unique similarities between Lake Baikal, a high mountain lake located in Russian Siberia which holds 20% of the world's fresh water, and Lake Tahoe.  He presented to over 100 people at the PlumpJack Conference Center.

2005 - Stanford University Professor Stephen H. Schneider spoke on The World Politics of Global Warming, Geologist Frank DeCourten completed a four-part lecture series on the formation of the Sierra Nevada mountains, and internationally known mountaineer and Paralympian Mark Wellman presented Beyond the Barriers.

2006 - Named Nonprofit of the Year by the North Lake Tahoe Chamber of Commerce.

2007 - Gallery Keoki in the Village at Squaw Valley hosted the second annual appreciation event for over 160 Squaw Valley Institute members.  The Institute received a grant from the Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation in 2007, which enabled it to offer a Speaker Series about civic engagement, led by Stanford University Professor Rob Reich.

2008 - Artist Keoki Flagg, moutaineer Glen Poulsen, and philanthropic entrepreneur Uli Schmid-Maybach, presented Uganda! Hope and Inspiration in the Pearl of Africa, which covered their travel in Uganda to chronicle the Maybach Family Foundation's mentorship program.  The Foundation sponsored a program for AIDS related medical work in this impoverished but beautiful mountainous country.

2009 - Squaw Valley Institute hosted An Evening with Greg Mortenson, author of Three Cups of Tea which attracted over 1,200 people from the local community.  The Squaw Valley Institute hosted 30+ events to over 6,000 attendees  on topics as varied as world affairs, science, the environment and philanthropy.  Nominated for Nonprofit of the Year by the Truckee Chamber of Commerce.

2010 - Squaw Valley Institute expanded coverage area to include Incline Village, and hosted 4 events in conjunction with the Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC).  Over 20 programs were hosted, including An Evening with Khaled Housseini, author of The Kite Runner and Exploring Antarctica with Adventurer Doug Stoup both hosted at the Resort at Squaw Creek.  The Institute also sponsored a live performance by comedian Tom McGillen at PlumpJack Squaw Valley Inn, as well as the much anticipated Mountain Film at Telluride Festival at Gallery Keoki and the Resort at Squaw Creek.
